1 John 3:4 – What is sin

Published On: 6 de February de 2022Categories: Bible Study

Do you know what sin is? Sin is the transgression of God’s law and commandments. Sin originated when human beings chose to disobey God’s will. 1 John 3:4 NVT Whoever lives in sin breaks the law, for all sin is against the law.

Sin entered humanity even in the Garden of Eden, through the disobedience of Adam and Eve. Sin had severe consequences for the human race, among them: the death, birth pains, physical and spiritual death, illness, murder, envy, etc.

After the sin of Adam and Eve’s disobedience, humanity began to be generated with an original sin. Romans 3:23 – For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;

We understand that there is no sin and no sin, because for God sin is always sin. But we must also understand that there are sins of death and there are sins that are not for death.

1 John 5:16 – If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin that does not lead to death, he will pray, and God will give life to those who sin not leading to death. There is sin unto death, and for that I do not say pray.

The sins not leading to death are those we commit without realizing we have committed them. John is saying that this prayerful person must be a brother, that is, a believer who did not deliberately desire to sin and whose sin was not a deliberate rebellion against God’s will.

This believer that John reports still has spiritual life in him, but he is spiritually weak, he is repentant and seeks to free himself from everything that displeases God. It is for these people that John is recommending to pray.

For those who were once believers and now commit sin “unto death”, the church cannot pray with the certainty that God will give more grace and life to the same.

We understand that sins that are committed to death are deliberate sins. , resulting from disobedience continues the will of God. These people are spiritually dead and can only receive life if they repent of their sins and truly vote for God.

The only thing the church can do for those who commit the sin of deathyou have an opportunity to bring about acceptance anew of God’s salvation in Christ

thatAlready the sins of death, immediately lead to spiritual death, because the terrible sins that show a rebellion against God and his word, result in spiritual death, that is, they are sin. of those who lead man to separate life from God.
When we do not sin and choose a life of righteousness to God, we produce good fruit, but when we choose sin, we begin to produce bad fruit.

Galatians 5:17 – For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are opposed to one another, so that ye do not do what ye will. Every day we fight a daily battle between obeying or disobeying the voice of God.

The spirit and the flesh are always in opposition to each other. The flesh desires that we come to fulfill its delights which are: adultery, fornication, impurity, lasciviousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, emulations, wrath, strife, dissensions, heresies, envyings, murders, gluttonous drunkenness, and those who commit such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Whoever seeks to obey God and his word is guided by the Spirit and in addition to walking in the Spirit he also produces fruits, which are: love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. When we walk according to the will of God, we crucify our flesh along with our passions and lusts to live according to the good, perfect and pleasing will of God.

When in the garden, Adam and Eve committed only one sin, but the consequences of that sin were many.

Sin is like an abyss that is able to call another abyss, and the word of God says: Psalms 42:7 A deep calls to another deep, at the sound of your waterfalls; all your waves and your waves have passed over me.

When we look at the mistakes made in the past, we extract some scores that make us understand the consequences that sin has generated.

  • The serpent became cursed Out of all domestic and wild animals
  • Man was now subject to physical and spiritual death
  •  Adam and Eve were driven out of the garden
  •  Eve would now have birth pangs
  • The earth became cursed and now for all life man would have hard work to make a living off the land.

So that the list of consequences generated by sin was not so extensive here, let’s reflect again on:

Galatians 5:19-21 – Because the works of the flesh are manifest, which are: adultery, fornication, impurity, lewdness, idolatry sorcery, enmities, strife, emulations, wrath, strife, dissensions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like, concerning which I declare to you, as I told you before, that those who do these things do not will inherit the kingdom of God.

We understand here that the works of the flesh which are described above, some already had reports of events back there, where we can clearly highlight enmity, anger, envy, which together contributed to the first murder that happened on earth, where Cain kills his brother Abel, for his sacrifice was inferior to what Abel offered to God.

Sin was only one, but the consequences of sin are numerous and in the same way that Adam and Eve sinned and had their consequences, the human being today when he sins, he is also subject to the consequences of his sin.

When we disobey God and his ordinances, we are subject to a consequence.

The apostle Paul will say that: 1 Corinthians 6:12 – “Everything is permissible for me”, but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permitted to me”, but I must not become a slave to anything. There was a false theology that was preached by Paul’s enemies. Where they thought they had the right to do whatever they wanted.

The apostle Paul warns in the above verse about slavery, for we know and understand that sin makes man its slave, and the Lord Jesus himself speaks about it: John 8:34 – Jesus answered them, Truly, truly I say to you that everyone who commits sin is a servant of sin.

Only the Lord Jesus Christ has the power to free those who seek forgiveness for their sins. John 8:36 – If therefore the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.  If we allow Jesus Christ to truly free us completely from our sins, so that we will not commit them again, the word of God says that we will truly be free, that is, we will no longer be slaves to Sin, because God has freed us. through your son Jesus.

The enemy of our souls, works tirelessly every day, so that the children of God, come to live in a life of sin, because he knows that when we sin constantly, we are removed from the presence of God to the point of reaching the sin of death.

God wants us to live a life in holiness, and God knows that we will be prone to error, that is, to sin committed unconsciously, that is, those we commit, without even realizing it, but every day in our prayers that we come to ask God : “Lord forgive us our mistakes as we forgive our debtors”.

God is ready to forgive us, and what God loves most is when we recognize that we are flawed, sinners and that we urgently need to change the picture of our life, through the forgiveness that only God can grant.

Regardless of what your sin is, surrender today at the feet of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and say to Him, “Father, forgive my sins, make me your child again, cleanse my body, cleanse my mind, cleanse my thoughts. , my soul and my heart and so make your home in my life amen.
