Joshua 1:9 (NIV) “Did I not command you? Be strong and brave! Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Freedom of choice is a precious gift given by God to each human being. Although He invites us to follow Him, He does not force us to do so. This freedom, however, is accompanied by God’s unconditional love and His patience with us.

2 Peter 3:9 (NIV) “The Lord is not slow in fulfilling his promise, as some people think. On the contrary, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.”

Although the choice is ours, God longs for our choice to serve Him. His patience and love are evident in the way He gave the people of Israel opportunity after opportunity to return to Him, even when they erred.

The Renewed Alliance

After Joshua made his commitment to serve the Lord, the people of Israel responded with their own covenant promise.

Joshua 24:18 (NIV) “We also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”
