The book of Matthew 7:7 invites us to seek and find. Jesus himself encourages us to ask, seek and knock, and promises that we will receive, find and open to us. This passage is a wonderful promise that encourages us to pray and seek God’s will in our lives.

In this study, we will examine what it means to seek God and how you can Matthew 7:7- Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and ye shall find what we seek. Let’s explore the Scriptures for answers and guidance on how to seek God wholeheartedly.

What does it mean to seek God?

Before we can find God, we need to know what it means to seek Him. The search for God is not just a search for blessings and rewards, but it is a process of knowing God more deeply. We must seek God with sincerity and an open heart, willing to listen and obey his voice.

One of the best-known verses in the Bible about seeking God is Jeremiah 29:13: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” This verse shows us that the search for God must be complete, unreserved and without conditions.

Another verse that highlights the importance of seeking God is Matthew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” This verse reminds us that God should be our top priority in all areas of our lives. We must seek God first, and He will take care of the rest.

How can we seek God?

Now that we understand what it means to seek God, we need to know how to do it. Here are some practical ways to seek God:

1. Through prayer

Prayer is a powerful way to connect with God and seek His will in our lives. Jesus taught us how to pray in Matthew 6:9-13, and the “Our Father” prayer is one of the most well-known and recited prayers throughout the Christian world.

Prayer allows us to talk to God, express our desires, and ask for guidance. But prayer shouldn’t just be a monologue – we should also hear God’s voice in our prayers and be open to his will.

2. Through reading the Bible

The Bible is the Word of God and is the main source of guidance and wisdom for Christians. When we read the Bible, we are exposing ourselves to God’s will and learning more about who He is and how we can serve Him.

A verse that highlights the importance of reading the Bible is 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be fully equipped for every good work.”

3. Through fellowship with other Christians

Fellowship with other Christians is a valuable way to seek God. When we join with other Christians in worship, Bible study, and prayer, we are strengthened in our faith and encouraged to seek God together.

The Bible talks about the importance of fellowship in Hebrews 10:24-25 : “And let us consider one another, to stimulate one another to love and good works, not forsaking the meeting together, as is the habit of some; rather, let us make admonitions, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

4. Through obedience to God’s will

Seeking God also involves obeying His will. We must be willing to put our own wills aside and follow God’s will, even if it means sacrifice or difficulty.

The verse of 1 John 2:3-5 talks about the relationship between obedience and knowledge of God: “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that says, I know him, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is in him truly perfected; By this we know that we are in it.”

What do we find when we seek God?

By seeking God with sincerity and an open heart, we can find many important things in our lives.

1. We find salvation in Jesus Christ

The greatest thing we find when we seek God is salvation in Jesus Christ. When we recognize our need for a Savior and trust Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are forgiven and given eternal life.

John 3:16 is one of the best-known verses in the Bible about salvation: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

2. We find peace and joy in God

When we seek God, we also find peace and joy in His presence. God’s peace transcends all human understanding and allows us to rest in His grace and mercy. The joy of God is a source of strength and hope in our lives.

Philippians 4:6-7 talks about the peace of God: “Do not be anxious about anything; rather, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, make your requests known before God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

3. We find guidance and direction for our lives

When we seek God, He also guides and directs us in our lives. Through prayer and Bible reading, we can hear God’s voice and receive guidance on important decisions we need to make in our lives.

Proverbs 3:5-6 talks about the importance of trusting God for direction in our lives: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

4. We find strength and courage to face challenges

When we seek God, we also find strength and courage to face challenges in our lives. God gives us the strength to overcome our weaknesses and the courage to persevere through difficulties.

2 Timothy 1:7 talks about the power God gives us: “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Conclusion

Seeking God is an ongoing, lifelong journey in a Christian’s life. It’s a choice we make every day to turn to Him for salvation, peace, direction, and strength. By seeking God, we are transformed and renewed in our minds and hearts. May we always sincerely and diligently seek God, knowing that He loves us and desires a personal relationship with us.
