Today we will talk about a distinguished blind man! This man was sitting by the roadside begging, and the Bible teaches us many lessons that we can apply today.
The healing of the blind man of Jericho teaches us, first of all, that the crowd standing there only saw what their physical eyes could perceive. They could see physically, but in truth, they were spiritually blind.
Spiritual blindness prevented the crowd from seeing the true essence of Jesus Christ. Despite having the physical ability to see, their souls remained darkened by a lack of spiritual understanding and sensitivity. Many times, the crowd was merely after what Jesus could offer—that is, chasing after blessings while forgetting to seek the Blessing Giver. As a result, they were limited to a superficial view of the world around them, unable to appreciate the depth of heavenly things Jesus had to offer.
On the other hand, this man by the roadside was physically blind, yet he saw more than the entire crowd because he “saw through spiritual eyes”—he saw through faith, believing that his miracle could become a reality at that very moment. The Bible describes the reality of the blind man of Jericho, sitting by the way, leading us to imagine that society might have looked at him and said: “He is just another one, another helpless soul who offers no benefit.”
Luke 18:35-43
As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord, I want to see,” he replied. Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.
Lesson 1: The Opportunity to Receive a Miracle
Luke 18:36 — “When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening.”
One day, while sitting and begging, he heard something unusual. This passage reminds us of the importance of recognizing and seizing special moments when God manifests in our lives. It shows us that, even in the face of difficulties and limitations, it is possible to recognize the Divine presence and receive the blessings He offers. Like that man, we can open our hearts and allow God’s light to guide, inspire, and transform us.
The blind man of Jericho heard something out of the ordinary and decided to find out what was happening. According to Luke 18:37, they informed him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. The scripture simply notes he was told Jesus of Nazareth was passing by, prompting us to reflect that someone in that moment paused and began sharing Jesus’ miraculous acts. Perhaps that person said: “Jesus the Nazarene is passing. He has been performing healings, miracles, signs, wonders, and even raising the dead; He makes the impossible happen wherever He goes.” Even though he only knew Jesus by hearsay, an immediate desire filled his heart, and he began calling out to the Lord Jesus to receive his miracle.
Luke 18:38-39 — “He called out, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!'”
This example reveals something truly wonderful. While some people ignored him and told him to stop shouting, the blind man of Jericho demonstrates that he was the one who truly needed the miracle. He did not let the negative words around him shake his determination. With faith and perseverance, he kept calling out. His persistence was rewarded: when Jesus passed by, he was heard and healed. This reminds us to maintain unwavering faith despite adversity and never give up seeking the miracles we need. Each of us has our own journey and needs; we must keep believing that healing and transformation are attainable. This passage teaches that we are the ones in need of the miracle. Therefore, no matter what others say or if they claim the Master will not hear us, we must persist, seek, and pray continuously. That man tuned out the surrounding voices and focused solely on the Provider of miracles.
Lesson 2: Receiving Our Miracle Means Calling Out
The blind man of Jericho began shouting: “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” The crowd told him to be quiet, yet he cried out all the louder. Our God is the God who changes destinies. He persisted despite voices attempting to silence him. Unwavering faith compelled him to keep asking for mercy, indifferent to obstacles in his path. Jesus stopped and called him, hearing his sincere cry. He was healed, illustrating not only the restoration of physical sight, but also serving as a powerful example of how faith and perseverance lead to life-changing encounters.
Luke 18:40-41 — “Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ ‘Lord, I want to see,’ he replied.”
When calling him, Jesus asked: “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus already knew his need, but He wanted to hear it directly from him. Today, the Lord wants to hear your needs—for you to voice them and express the deep desires of your heart through prayer. The Lord asks you today: “What do you want me to do for you?”
When the Lord invites us to express our needs through prayer, He reminds us of His unconditional love and willingness to help. By asking what we want Him to do, He invites us to trust Him and share our deepest longings. May we open ourselves to this sincere, empowering dialogue, trusting that the Lord is always ready to listen and guide us with love and compassion. His words are a gentle reminder of His constant presence to help us find comfort, peace, and direction. We should approach Him with humility and confidence, knowing He welcomes us warmly at all times.
When Jesus asked the blind man what he needed, he promptly replied, “Lord, I want to see!” By communicating his need to Jesus, he received his miracle and regained his sight. Through every encounter with Jesus, we are transformed; His faith and mercy turn our darkness into light, our anguish into hope, and our impossibilities into a living testimony of divine power.
Lesson 3: Your Faith and Perseverance Determine Your Miracle
Having the faith that obstacles can be overcome and goals reached is the first step toward making your miracle a reality. Stand firm, even during hardship, as your determination will lead to your breakthrough. Remember, just as the blind man ignored opposing voices to receive his miracle, the power to transform your life rests in your hands—with faith and dedication, no challenge is too great to overcome. Believe in yourself and your potential, and you will see the impossible become possible.
Luke 18:42-43 — “Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.’ Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God.”
He instantly regained his vision and began following Jesus, glorifying God. Witnessing this miracle, the entire community began praising God. Gratitude not only positions us to receive blessings, but leads us to follow the Blessing Giver.
Gratitude is a powerful emotion connecting us to God and one another. Witnessing miracles or small acts of kindness invites us to reflect on the generosity and love surrounding our lives. Following the Blessing Giver means more than seeking blessings; it means walking alongside the One who shows us the path of compassion and humility.
Though physically blind, this man knew through faith that Jesus could heal him, recognizing that only Jesus could rewrite his story. When we put faith into action, we witness God’s miracles—be it healing, deliverance, transformation, or renewal. Every miracle in our lives manifests through faith. May we place our trust in God and believe that the impossible can come to pass.
